This Skinned Frog Tried So Hard to Get Away—Did You Eat His Legs?
Getting skinned alive and hacked apart may sound like medieval torture, but it’s standard practice for workers in the frogs’ legs industry to tear apart still-conscious frogs. A PETA Asia investigation reveals that frogs were still alive and able to feel when workers cut them open, skinned them, and butchered them so that their legs could be sold to restaurants and grocery stores around the world.
Frogs Call Out, Move, and Jump While Workers Tear Their Bodies Apart
At slaughterhouses in Vietnam, PETA Asia’s investigator documented that workers force frogs into mostly melted ice water, which is meant to help numb them but does not when tepid, before cutting their backs with scissors, skinning them, and dismembering them. Many frogs made sounds of distress, moved, and even jumped while workers hacked away at their bodies. Some skinned frogs were still alive and trying desperately to escape for up to 15 minutes after workers removed the flesh from their bodies.
PETA Asia’s investigation in Indonesia documented similar widespread cruelty to frogs, including slamming live frogs onto the ground and using knives to hack at frogs’ heads and feet while they were still conscious. Following PETA Asia’s investigation and after hearing from the 90,000 supporters who took action for frogs by joining PETA entities around the world in writing to Carrefour Group, the global supermarket giant cut ties with a supplier and ended its sale of legs from Indonesia.
How Frogs’ Legs from Vietnam End Up On Plates in the U.S., Canada, and Elsewhere
Frogs’ legs from the facilities that PETA Asia’s investigators visited were reportedly sold to buyers in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Singapore. When someone orders frogs’ legs at a restaurant or buys them in a grocery store, the frog the legs belonged to was likely skinned alive and hacked apart while still conscious. Never buy or eat them—and urge any restaurant serving them to remove them from the menu. If you don’t eat frogs’ legs but still eat other animals’ body parts, please go vegan today:
